We are currently recruiting for a Category Buyer to work within the Group Procurement Function and to take the lead on a number of key category areas. You will own these categories and be responsible for understanding what the business needs and how we can best deliver goods and services to support them. You will do this by formulating category and sourcing strategies to procure fit for purpose materials, services and capital equipment that deliver value to the business and meet our expectations around quality and delivery. The role is an exciting position that sits at the forefront of new and exciting projects that support the business in it’s continued investment in capital equipment and infrastructure across the UK.


In this role the key responsibilities will include:


Business Partnering / Stakeholder management

  • Identifying key goods and services and manage continuity of supply
  • Advise the business on commercial issues/opportunities
  • Assist the forecasting & budget process with comments and market rationale, identifying key drivers and potential measures to mitigate
  • Create Customer engagement within BUs where Procurement is an integral contact for the defined stakeholders.
  • Engage and work closely with defined stakeholders to understand their needs / requirements and draft Category Strategies
  • Support synergy across BUs with the aim of driving value
  • Act as a first point of contact for resolution and escalate supply chain and quality issues


Managing Spend Area / Category Strategy Development Support

  • Ensure continuous observation, analysis and evaluation of the procurement market (suppliers, prices, capacity, etc.) to optimise the business position
  • Develop category strategies, carry out tenders, analysis and create negotiation plans to ensure a competitive environment which challenges the supply base and ensures we achieve the best commercial position whilst maintaining the levels of quality and service required for the business.
  • Support new product launches within the BUs ensuring sourcing of new suppliers and contracts are placed for defined materials / new requirements in the responsible spend area.
  • Ensure procurement policy, processes and spend compliance rules are in place.
  • Support and utilise the Category management procedures & capital project support to ensure that we achieve the best quality, service and cost; whilst allowing innovative thinking to consistently improve our approach
  • Work with shared services to create and maintain information records & material contracts, purchase orders on the SAP system.


Supplier Management

  • Search, selection and qualification of suppliers and in accordance with strategic requirements.
  • Engage with and understand the supply chain, become an expert - the go to person for the business
  • Ensure we proactively manage supplier performance to achieve the agreed KPIs.
  • To implement standard framework agreements or contracts
  • Develop innovative ways in which to cooperate with suppliers to develop sustainable added value potential.
  • Support and deliver value creation opportunities from market intelligence and the supply base managing performance against target and implementation timelines (through savings trackers reported to the business).
  • Support the wider team to carry out continuous improvement and efficiency reviews within the function
  • Ensure that our suppliers share the same ESG aspirations as Muller and our customers


Key skills & experience

  • Proven experience as category buyer or similar role that requires commercial expertise
  • Solid knowledge of category management
  • Capex or engineering consumables/spares category management is preferable but not essential
  • Good understanding of data analysis and associated tools
  • An analytical mind with the ability to think and act strategically
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Knowledge of SAP or Ariba is beneficial
  • MCIPS or a Degree level qualification is preferable but not essential (you can continue training for or start on the MCIPS journey at Muller)
