We are currently recruiting for a Senior Tax Manager - Customs to join our friendly team based in Market Drayton but within a home working/office environment.




To have responsibility for all areas of Customs across the Muller & Culina UK Groups. To have responsibility for the Customs Department; fostering a harmonious environment & achieving a high performing team; ensuring targets are met & training needs are identified. To lead on Strategy and Tax Planning in relation to Customs. To support the Tax Director.




Customs – Daily Imports and Exports:

  • Responsibility for the Imports and Exports functions of the Muller business, ensuring KPIs are achieved and a high level of service is provided to the business
  • Performing in strategic and advisory capacity, delegating day to day tasks and queries to the Customs Team manager and Senior Customs advisor, being their escalation point and supporting them to achieve a high performing Customs Department.
  • Keeping abreast of ongoing changes to legislation and make amendments to processes / procedures
  • To participate in decision making and deployment of strategies and manage any HRMC enquiries and maintain a relationship with HRMC
  • Identify Weaknesses in the business process and planning; providing support and training via team members to upskill colleagues in the business as necessary
  • Be the escalation point for issues, make decisions and delegate tasks
  • To ensure the Culina teams are supported by the customs team as required.


Customs Projects and Advisory work:

  • Keep abreast of ongoing changes to legislation and future-proof the business and manage any ongoing risks / identify opportunities for the Muller and Culina business in the area of customs
  • Raise issues / make proposals to the UK Tax Director/Board as appropriate
  • Lead customs related planning meetings across the business to develop and implement solutions and mitigate risks; working closely with Direct and Indirect Tax colleagues
  • Be able to explain technical customs issues through verbal and written communications clearly and succinctly to tax and non-tax professionals at all levels including the Executive Board
  • Support other departments such as Commercial and Supply Chain, including business travel as required for meetings with Customs and 3rd party logistic providers / Group companies.
  • Support Colleagues regarding Brexit implications to overseas Group companies
  • Tax review of contract -  support from a customs angle.


Managing and Developing People and the UK Customs Department:

  • Manager own direct reports and lead colleagues within the wider team and across the business
  • Attend courses and training to continue to develop own management skills and those of the team leaders
  • Ensure own team is structured effectively and has the relevant capability to achieve the functional objectives through; performance, management, coaching, up-skilling and development, resource planning, talent identification and succession planning.
  • Manage the customs Budget (circa £400k)
  • Build relations with the senior stakeholders across the Group in order to identify tax  opportunities and ensure that opportunities and risks are considered at the right time.
  • Devise new methods to promote and raise awareness of the Customs Department within the business


Essential Skills and Qualifications:


  • Master Degree
  • Minimum 4 years PQE in either an accountancy firm or industry with significant experience in the area of Customs and proven managerial experience
  • Excellent working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • In-depth knowledge of Customs legislation


Desirable Skills


  • Ability to keep up to date with changes to tax legislation and apply these to business
  • 4-5 years’ experience in a Customs environment
  • Ability to deliver technical training sessions to a wide audience and explain complex issues at all levels including presenting to the executive board
  • Experienced manager and trainer
