Our vision is to be Britain’s “Private Label Dairy Leader” with partnering excellence a core pillar of this strategy; to enable this, an opportunity has arisen for a Category Manager in our Category team.


As a Category Manager you will ‘own’ the category relationship with your Business Unit customers and deliver actionable insight anchored to the account plans as part of Natural Working Teams. You will be the go-to contact for the Business Unit Head and Natural Working Teams on all aspects of category, providing range, space & merchandising recommendations that place the shopper and the customer at the heart of your thinking.


• To lead category thinking with internal stakeholders and key customers within your business unit accounts
• To develop & execute category plans with key customers through customer centric Natural Working Teams according to the agreed account plans
• To take a leadership role in resetting customer relationships from the ‘transactional’ to the ‘strategic’


Key responsibilities
• Working with cross functional MMI teams via Natural Work Teams (including Accounts, Innovation, R&D) to develop joined up customer plans which include category plans
• Influencing key strategic retail partners’ stakeholders to maximise MMI influence on their category strategies for incremental profit & sales growth
• Leading MMI category visions and insights for customer(s), to influence range reviews and merchandising reviews
• Leading category insight /JBP planning days with a specific customer(s)
• Leading specific customer projects, based on customer strategies and focus areas e.g. trials, ‘store of the futures’ etc.
• Supporting & coaching junior category colleagues (both direct and non-direct reports) to become expert Category Managers
• Supporting Head of Category to focus on longer term planning, including cross customer projects that set the business up for success (including supporting the MMI Category Vision & MMI Innovation Pipeline)
• Working with research providers & agencies to brief out and receive back insightful analysis (e.g. dunnhumby)


Skills & experience
• Ideally an experienced Category Manager, with proven individual results, including evidence of delivering lasting relationship improvements in the category setting
• High level of resilience and capability to work autonomously with customers without day to day direction
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage the customer via a Natural Working Team / account team
• Deep understanding of shopper/consumer/market insights and how these drive category growth in retailers
• Understanding of category strategies and interpreting these into account level plans, down to range, space and merchandising recommendations underpinned by size of prize targets & KPIs
• Implementing and evaluating category plans and trials in store
• Tracking and reporting on performance vs. targets – distribution, space, range etc
• Excellent numeracy, analytical and data interpretation skills
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
